Wrapping up Lil' Man's NICU Stay

Week 2 in the NICU:

Grandma came to stay with us, which meant for a much much MUCH happier Bean! Yay!

The small hospital we were in was bursting with 3 NICU babies, so we were moved from the nursery to a makeshift "NICU" (former patient room) for a few days.

We celebrated Halloween.

I decided I definitely dislike the holiday. My sweet 2 1/2 year-old was terrified of all the scary costumes, and then turned into a little monster herself, demanding candy from people and forgetting to say please and thank you, which I swear she is normally great at, and when I put a bowl of candy on the porch so people would stop ringing the bell, a swarm of greedy 10-ish year-olds who saw me watching them right as I put the bowl out came and emptied it right in front of me. Do I sound like a grumpy old kill-joy? Haha ;) I know, I do. Boo Halloween!

The day after Halloween, we visited with our friends Carolyn and Joe who happened to be in town from Oregon. It was super fun! We had them over for dinner, and made pizza and brownie sundaes. Cara was my absolute bestie in high school, and she and her boyfriend Joe were in Utah visiting his dad who recently moved here for work. We had a great time catching up and we were super impressed with all they learned on their tours of temple square and other church history sites about our faith. We had a great discussion and had a fun evening with them. We're hoping they'll be able to make another trip to Utah again soon, and we'll have to try to find a way to get back up to my hometown next time we go see my parents too, because it had been way too long!

We'd been expecting Lil' Man to be released from the NICU a couple of days before, and things were kind of flip-flopping--he'd eat well and then not, have a good day and then a really awful day, the nurses would say it looked like we should be going home soon one day and then the next it was looking like it would be another week--needless to say, we were getting frustrated. On our second Sunday in the NICU we had a family fast for Lil' Man. The next day things began to really look up. We heard that, if he had a good night, Lil' Man would probably be able to go home the next day, so all Monday night we were praying real hard, and hoping for a really really great night. And it was a pretty good night. Not perfect, but good enough, and frankly, I think they needed more bed space and knew that Lil' Man was well enough to go home anyway. Hoorah! So we packed up our little NICU bed and paid our bill (thank goodness for good insurance!) and got outta there! We're so happy to have our little man home, and are basking in that now :)

  1. Lady Iris's glasses are classy. :) It seems like it has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for you, hopefully things are settling down now. What a fun visit to have from such a good friend, is she the gal that you would brainstorm Harry Potter possibilities when the books were still being written?

Insurance is amazing! This will be the first time ever that we have had good insurance with a pregnancy. I did a calculation for what we paid out of pocket with Eli when we were self insured we could have 37 babies on the insurance we have now. It boggles my mind. However we would pay for it all again. These little people are so worth it, yours are so sweet.
